    The first Six Origins project release from the extraordinarily strong 2018 vintage focuses on the Barossa’s hero – Shiraz. Six winemakers have each been charged with producing a wine that presents as a distinctive expression of Barossa Shiraz determined primarily by its origin.

    The 2018 Six Origins by Artisans of Barossa features six Shiraz produced from six Barossa vineyards by six artisan winemakers. The wines have been made by:

    2018 High Eden Shiraz - Peter Schell, Spinifex Wines

    With family roots and extensive wine-making experience in the South of France, there is a strong French connection which drives the style and feel of Spinifex. With a winemaking philosophy that embraces sustainable vineyard practises and minimal intervention in the winery, there is a strong focus on producing wines where balance, purity of fruit and restraint is key.

    2018 Light Pass Shiraz – Jason Schwarz, Schwarz Wine Co.

    The Schwarz family most definitely qualifies as ‘local’ in a Barossa sense. Five generations a resident, then two generations as grape growers, and now Jason Schwarz as a first generation, self-taught winemaker. Jason’s approach to winemaking is purposely low intervention, with a hands-off approach that ensures the qualities of the vineyard are to the fore in each of his wines.

    2018 Keyneton Shiraz – Greg and Allison Hobbs, Hobbs of Barossa Ranges

    The vineyard that encircles their home high up in the Eden Valley is one of the district’s oldest. The connection the Hobbs’ have to the Eden Valley is like few others. They look over it every morning when they wake up, they pass through it every morning taking the dog for a walk, they work in their vineyard every day…and each evening they enjoy a glass of wine from the fruit they’ve grown from the vines that surround them.

    2018 Angaston Shiraz – Corey Ryan and Simon Cowham, Sons of Eden

    The Sons of Eden approach to wine is simple - to produce wines with flavour and personality from Barossa vineyards of unique character.

    2018 Gomersal Shiraz – John Lienert, Jack West Wines

    Preferring to keep things simple, John makes wines that express a sense of place, wines with plenty of rich and juicy flavour and a good strong backbone – the style of wine for which the Barossa’s Western Ridge is renowned for.

    2018 Ebenezer Shiraz – John and Tim Duval, John Duval Wines

    After 28 years with Penfolds, including 16 years as Chief Winemaker, John launched his own label in 2003 with the aim of producing wines of structure and elegance from exceptional Barossa vineyards.

    Colour
    A vibrant, mid-dense purple crimson with a deep, black cherry-skin core.

    Nose
    There is fragrant spice, dark cherry, plum, dark chocolate, freshly roasted coffee beans and charry oak characters.

    Palate
    Generous & rounded at first with juicy, deep berry compote fruits then yielding to a tightly woven frame of firm yet generous tannins. There are alluring oak and fine dark chocolate characters, with a deep, soft centre of ripe berry fruits. Elegant acids and light, long tannins carry the palate to a lingering finish.

    Although a little closed when first opened, this wine soon becomes vibrant, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose is full of red berries, cassis and a refined leafiness. The palate is young and fresh with spicy acidity and gravelly tannins.

    The oak is restrained and balanced, allowing the old vine character to shine through. This wine needs time (and patience) to evolve and will reward cellaring in the medium to long term.

    A favourite of many of the cellar workers, this classic blend needs some time to unwind. The nose is fragrant, with intense McLaren Vale Grenache blood orange character, supported with ferrous and iodine notes.

    There's some initial fruit sweetness on the front palate, quickly morphing into a long line of concentrated red fruit and spice.

    The finish is tangy, with young, crunchy tannins, resulting in a wine with fantastic structure and incredible length.

    Tasting Notes

    The heady aroma is both powerful and pretty with notes of fennel, purple flowers and blossom mingling with ripe, varietal purple fruits and black pepper. The oak is hardly evident which allows fruit and soil complexities to emerge with edges of rhubarb and red mulberry and savoury characters of dried herbs, game and spice.

    The palate opens with anise, black pepper, graphite and restrained dark cherries before it gives way to seductive mulberry, plum, licorice and spice. It has great power, depth and length with very vibrant, gritty fruit tannins providing immense structure.

    Notes of anise and spice linger for a long time after the last sip.

    Nose: The unique vinification process of this Great Reserve provides a complex, elegant nose with notes of liquorice and redfruit, typical of the Tempranillo, along with hints of spices subtly added by the Graciano.
